Helene and Dennis Livingston will inform the Club and visitors on the laterst activities of BlazeAid, a volunteer-based organisation that works with families and individuals in rural Australia after natural disasters such as fires and floods. Working alongside the rural families, the volunteers help to rebuild fences and other structures that have been damaged or destroyed. The assistance is not only material, as volunteers also help to lift the spirits of people who are often facing their second or third flood event after years of drought, or devastating losses through bushfires. BlazeAid is a volunteer-based organisation that works with families and individuals in rural Australia after natural disasters such as fires and floods, working alongside the rural families to rebuild fences and other structures that have been damaged or destroyed. Rhonda O'Connor is the Mission Director looking after a new $120 million hospital St John of God's is currently building in Berwick, investing in state-of-the-art facilities and equipment to significantly expand the services we deliver to our rapidly growing community. The new hospital will open in January 2018, expanding the locally-based team of health professionals with more than 200 new jobs to become a major employment source and consolidating Berwick as a hub in the Victorian health and education strategic plan. On March 9, 1940 Dr Percy Langmore and his son Dr Leonard Langmore opened the first Berwick and District Bush Nursing Hospital on Gloucester Avenue. Alongside three nurses, they provided hospital services for the 1,000 residents of Berwick. St John of God Health Care continues the legacy of the early pioneers since 2003 and began a period of expansion and modernisation that would help meet the health care demands of the growing population of Casey and Cardinia. The Level Crossing Removal Authority was created to oversee the removal of 50 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne. Construction is progressing on several sites, with early consultation and planning on the way for the delivery of the entire program, including the Berwick level crossing with Clyde Road. Mr Greg Tantala, a communications adviser working for the Authority will talk about the progress of the program along the Pakenham line affecting most of the Berwick population. Mental health is a hot topic in our society. The Rotary Club of Berwick, together with the Rotary Clubs of Pakenham and Narre Warren have contributed to addressing the problem through Positive Mental Health forums and raising moneys to train professional counsellors and Prevent Suicide in Youth monitors. On Wednesday 25th October we will be venturing (excuse the pun) up to Beaconsfield Upper to meet the Split Rock Rover Crew. This group of young men and women will tell us about their involvement in the local community, what they do at meetings and they will share information about their purpose built Mud Bash Vehicle. After our visit to ‘The Igloo’, at 40 Stoney Creek Rd, Beaconsfield Upper, we will move further up the road, to the Pine Grove Hotel, for dinner. Wednesday night is $15 Parma night, but the full menu will be available for those who do not feel like a Parma. As usual, apologies and guests need to be in by the usual Rotary deadline. The Berwick Farmers and Craft Market combine the best of local produce and locally produced craft into one market. There is a great range of products on offer with over 30 stallholders. The market is held at the Old Cheese Factory in Homestead Road, Berwick and is held on the fourth Saturday of each month except December.
