FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there… Special thoughts for the dads who are no longer with us, and who have played an important part in shaping who we are today!

It’s been another busy week at the Rotary Club of Berwick. From the hustle and bustle of the Farmers and Craft Market on Saturday, to our direct engagement with prospective students at the Federation University Open Day on Sunday, and a social outing to the Queen Vic Night Market on Wednesday, members and friends of the club have been fully engaged.

In this week’s edition of the Spoke ‘n’ Words you will read the latest report from Alex Kraan our exchange student and worthy ambassador in Switzerland, and a feature article based on the insights that Adam Hughes, President of the Rotary Club of Port Moresby, shared with members and guests on the night that he visited the club on the 9th of August.

Our monthly Farmers and Craft Market at the Old Cheese factory was a success, with a large number of stalls turning up to display their wares. A steady flow of visitors made for a good atmosphere. For the first time the Salvos set up a stall and their discounted toys attracted a lot of attention.

On Sunday the club in collaboration with the Casey-Cardinia Rotaract Club hosted a stand at the Federation University Open Day. It was an opportunity to engage directly with prospective students and promote the Rotary and Rotaract brands. Students had the opportunity to participate in a survey to gauge their level of knowledge and interest in Rotary, and avenues to serve the community.

It was great to see the reactions to our Facebook posts on the day, and the multiple shares including Rotary Australia. Great PR!!

VISIT TO THE QUEEN VICTORIA NIGHT MARKET
On what turned out to be a perfect winters evening, 41 Rotarians, family and friends ventured into the city to experience an event not to be missed... the Queen Victoria Night Market!

A large contingent (some having to get their heads around using a myki card for the first time) travelled in by train, entertaining all those on carriage number 3 on the 1 hour journey.  Some made their way in via the Monash carpark, while others, who make this trip into Melbourne on a daily basis due to work commitments, were at the meeting point to greet us...with one (who rumour has it) who had already downed an ale or two before we had arrived!

ROTARIANS MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN PORT MORESBY
At our meeting on the 9th of August we were visited by Adam Hughes, President of the Rotary Club of Port Moresby (RCPM). During the meeting Adam was invited to address the audience and he took the opportunity to tell us how his club is making a difference in Port Moresby.

Due to its strategic location, the RCPM is the club that assumes frontline responsibility for the incoming Donations In Kind (DIK) containers. Adam said that the school desks, medical supplies, hospital bed linen, dental equipment, and wheelchairs donated by Rotarians across Australia have helped make a significant difference in the communities throughout Papua New Guinea (PNG).  Without the desks and chairs for the classrooms, Adam said that children would have to sit on the ground to do their school work. This is unfortunately, still a reality for some schools in PNG.

This article about “Desks and Smiles and Rotary in PNG” is an example of the great work of the RCPM in partnership with Rotary clubs in Australia.

Adam then went on to tell us about his crusade to reduce family violence in Port Moresby...

NEWS FROM OUR INTERNATION EXCHANGE STUDENT, ALEX KRAAN, IN SWITZERLAND
It’s the long summer school holidays in Europe, so for Alex it has been a month of chilling out with friends and his host family, partying, hiking, and full of cross cultural exchanges and experiences. He even had the opportunity to do a newspaper and TV interview, which he says was “a little scary”.
