FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK - 20 SEPTEMBER, 2017
It’s been another busy week at the Rotary Club of Berwick with members involved in various activities to engage with the local community. On Wednesday during the day, some 15 members visited the Berwick Fields Primary School to see how the students are making use of the Lego Mindstorm Robotics kits funded by the Rotary Club of Berwick and District 9820.

On Wednesday night, no less than 53 members and guests attended the club meeting to hear guest speakers Hayden Radford and Jordan Van Rhyn, Year 11 students at Nossal High, talk about their experiences at the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) national competition in Canberra, in August 2017.  Hayden and Jordan were sponsored by the Rotary Club of Berwick to take part in this future leader’s development program and after winning the district competition in May, have acquitted themselves with distinction at the nationals by finishing 3rd

REPORT FROM THE MUNA NATIONALS
In May 2017, the Rotary Club of Berwick sponsored Hayden Radford and Jordan Van Rhyn,
Year 11 students at Nossal High in Berwick to participate in the District 9820 Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) competition, held in Phillip Island. Winning the competition, Hayden and Jordan went on to represent Rotary District 9820 at the MUNA Nationals at the Old Parliament House in Canberra in August.

On Wednesday night the pair were back at the Club to report on their experiences at the nationals where they got to debate current world political affairs and diplomacy with some of the brightest young minds across the country.

MEET ROBOTICS AT BERWICK FIELDS PRIMARY SCHOOL
David Button organised a group of Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Berwick to visit
Berwick Fields Primary School, on Wednesday 20 September, 2017.
I was one of those Rotarians and here is my story about this visit.  Sandi.

13 people came and were met by Dale Mills the Assistant Principal for the School.
Dale took us down the hallway to a series of smaller round tables.

Seated nearby were a group of children from Grade 6 who were going to show us how they are working with 14 Lego Mindstorm sets which the Rotary Club of Berwick and the Rotary Foundation (through a District Grant) paid for 3 sets @ $630 each.

MARKET REPORT - 23 SEPTEMBER, 2017
This is Cheryl’s first Market report.

Wow did the Spring weather kick in for this month’s market today. Starting early this morning, we felt the heat while setting up for the day but it was all worth it in the end. The heat stayed and the sky opened up and revealed beautiful sunshine for the rest of day.

We did experience a brief encounter with some wind closer to the end of the day. Everyone was in good spirits with a few changes I made to stallholder positions.   However most stayed till the very end.

We had a fantastic turn out for stallholders as well as customers, due to the improvement of the weather. This month saw additional stalls such as Waffledilicious, Alpace and Madhatters who brought with them a different variety of food (including gluten free waffles) on offer.

SEPTEMBER IS LITERACY MONTH
Final call  to donate a book!
A huge THANK YOU to all those who have contributed to the Rotary Club of Berwick’s “Book Drive” during the Basic Literacy and Education month in September.
Members and friends will have a final opportunity to donate books suitable for infants through to primary school aged children at the next week’s Club meeting (Wednesday 4th October).

All the books will be donated to kids in our local community who might have never had the opportunity of owning their own book.

If you’d like to donate there’s no need for expense – a $5.00 book from the newsagent or supermarket is fine!
Literacy and education is a key factor to overcoming poverty and all that goes with it.  Reading is the heart beat of basic education equipping children with skills for life and further learning.

So this is our final call for donations! A basket for collection will be at the attendance desk on Wednesday night, or see Jen or Jane.

JOKER'S WILD
The Jackpot was $1,522.25 this week.

Julie Allgood pulled out the ticket from all the other tickets crumpled up in the black bag.
Funno announced the number of the ticket Julie chose.  It was Lea Paton's ticket.
This is the third time Lea has had a chance to select the Joker from cards I offered her.

Unfortunately Lea took the 9 of Clubs from the deck.

Everyone cheered when they saw the Joker was still in the deck.
There are 26 cards remaining.

Joker's Wild is a fun session and members look forward to walking away with
the jackpot each week!!   Good luck all for next meeting when we have Joker's Wild.
