Club Meeting 18th January 2017
What a busy happy club we all belong to...

President Mark welcomed everyone back after the busy Christmas time.  He especially welcomed our visitors Di Sheepers and Anand Amarnath.  Anand was with us at the Cemetery cleanup.

Mark thanked everyone for their hard work since our previous meeting last year.  The Carols by led by Gus, Twilight Farmers Market by Terry Carmichael , Family BBQ at the Kraans, Art Screen delivery,  Benevolent Society with Steve Paton, Christmas Cakes and Puddings with Lea Paton, Cemetery Cleanup led by Adrian Funston.

Jim Wilson has gracefully accepted the role of Secretary for next year

We received a lovely Christmas card from Klara (YEP from Austria 2010-2011).  She is doing well,

A thank you was received from Berwick College for the awards presentation at the end of last year..

District Assembly will be at the end of May.

Royal Flying Doctors Service meeting will be a partner’s night 15th February

There will be a change to the system for keys to the shed.  Many keys have gone missing over the years.

If you know if someone is in hospital or unwell, please let Sharmaine know.  That way she can keep up with her Family of Rotary role.  It’s all about supporting members when they need it.

We would like members to do a “Behind the Badge” talk.  This is a great way of getting to know a bit more about both new and older members.  Please see Sjaak.

Paul Harris Fellows
President Mark and Past President Gerald had the great pleasure on honouring John Chipperfield and Trevor Burr from Clover Cottage with Paul Harris Fellows by the Rotary Club of Berwick.

The Inner Wheel Club of Narre Warren kindly allowed the presentation at their final International Women’s Day Function on Saturday 14th January.

John and Trevor’s contributions to the local community are well known.  Community groups such as Rotary, Inner Wheel, Hospitals, Schools, Kindergarten’s, Playgroups, sporting groups and many more have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years.

John commented that their association with Rotary goes back over 50 years.  In one weekend, they catered for Rotary’s 50 year celebrations with 2 cabaret balls for 700 people each night, 2 lunches and a breakfast.  Over 3000 people were beneficiaries of their hospitality that weekend.  The following year they bought Clover Cottage.

They thanked all the service clubs that have supported Clover Cottage and said that they were their lifeblood.

John and Trevor, their families and staff at Clover Cottage have helped to make Berwick and the surrounding areas a better place to be.  They will be missed.

Australia Day
Ricardo has taken over the running of Australia Day from Peter Mangan.

It’s all hands on deck.  Please arrive by 7am for set up.  The rosters and jobs have been allocated and everything is coming together.  Please wear your Rotary uniforms.

The usual attractions are in place.  No hay bales this year as it has been a huge work load for all concerned.  Extra food vans have been sourced.

Breakfast will be available from Primary @Pioneers from 8am – 9.30am.  The club will cover the cost of 1 menu item and 1 drink for Rotarians and Inner Wheelers.  Please let the wait staff know.  Anything else is at your own expense.
Farmers and Craft Market
Another month rolls around and the market is on again.  Saturday 28th January.

The twilight market went really well with 50 stall holders.

Looking to have 40 stalls this month.  Again all hands on deck.
Maureen Scott - Family Law
Our speaker this was our own Maureen Scott.  She told us she came to being a Lawyer later in life after working for ABC Television behind the camera in film editing among other things.

She gave us a very informative talk on Family Law about divorce, property settlement and children matters.

Her main advice on what to do is:
•    Find a Family Lawyer immediately you separate, or prior to separation
•    Word of mouth is best recommendation
•    Pay for your advice, free advice is worth what you pay for it
•    Listen & act on the advice you pay for
•    Put the interests of your children first
•    Plan for the future, don’t live in the past
•    Accept you chose the parent of your children so are stuck with that choice
•    Seek a fair outcome, not revenge - be realistic

Her full presentation will be sent to members separately.

Youth Exchange
It is that time of the year when we have to think about hosting an inbound exchange student.

The club has really benefited from the students we have hosted.  We need 4 host families for next year.  Please consider hosting, even if you do not have children at home.  Many have hosted without younger people around and it still works. We can have families who are not Rotarian's.  If you know of anyone please let us know.

Please contact Isobel if you have any questions or would like to host.  District wants a reply by 15th February.
Mental Health First Aid Training
We have received $2,000 in a matching District Grant for covering the Training Programme for Moderators for Mental Health / Youth Suicides.

The program is being offered to sporting clubs in the area.

Members of the Officer Football Club are attending the next course.

Isobel Caulfield completed the training last year.  She said it was well run and worthwhile doing.

Well done to Viv and Jim for this ongoing work.
Debutante Balls
The deb balls are in hand.  Pete Batterham has been briefed extremely well by Doug and Rhonda Anderson.  Everything is booked in.
The balls are on the 17th and 18th May.  Rehearsals start on 27th February.
We are looking for helpers, especially for the rehearsals.
Orbost Fishing Trip
Please let Adrian Funston know if you are going on the fishing trip.

Friday 3rd – Sunday 5th March

$100 non refundable deposit required by Friday 3rd February

It is a great weekend away and it is the RC Orbost’s biggest fundraiser for the year.  They are great hosts.
