Club Club Meeting 22nd March 2017
Another busy night with quite a few partners with us.

We welcomed Bert Ainge who was President in 1986-87.  He attends all the golf days, but hasn’t been to a meeting in a while.  Good to see you Bert.

Its market day again on Saturday.  A few workers are at the conference so it is all hands on deck.  Terry will be away for the month of April.  Darius is taking over the Fundraising portfolio.  Isobel and John will be looking after the stall holder side of the market for April.

Graham Johnson attended a Fire Warden training session with the RC Monash for the Holland Festival.  He said it was very informative and well worth doing.  We learnt that even if you have put a fire out, call the fire brigade otherwise insurance may not cover you.

The Golf Day is coming along.  Facebook posts are going out.  Teams are coming in but we still need more.  Items for the silent auction would be appreciated.

The St John of God Hospital had the first anniversary of the Oncology Unit and Wig Library.  Bob Lay represented the club.  Bruce Shaw was also there.  Lisa Norman the CEO of the Hospital was very appreciative of our support.

A reminder that Mock Interviews at Nossall High School on May 28th and 29th.  The RC Narre Warren are assisting as there are many students to interview.  Nossall will be providing lunch.

Wendy again left the joker in peace with $475.75 in the kitty.

Board Meeting Report
There have been issues with people accessing the shed.  New keys cut will be cut and a property officer is to be appointed.  A register will be set up for when anything it taken out of it.  Laury Gordyn is resigning from being the District Property Officer and all District property will be removed.  We are still sharing the shed with Narre Warren.

Unfortunately, we will not be hosting an inbound Exchange Student for the year 2017-18.  We do not have the host parents.  District has been notified.

Working with Children Checks and Form 3 checks are a requirement of our youth programs.  New members are being asked to complete the forms.  26 members have completed it, with 16 waiting for reference checks. 10 partners and family have completed it, with 8 awaiting checks.  Every referee must be contacted by our Safety Officer Graham so it takes a while.

The National Youth Science Forum again will be supported.  1 student will be fully funded.

Rotary Insurance requirements have changed.  A Certificate of Currency must be obtained for each specific event.  The Deb Balls, and Golf Day have one.  The market and art screens are already covered.  All events are covered under the one Rotary Policy.

The club finances are looking healthy.  There are some outstanding payments from members for dues and meals.  Can these please be paid as soon as possible.
Secretary's Report
Donations in Kind is loading its 500th container soon to be shipped from DIK in Footscray.  The club has donated $300 to be a gold sponsor and all are invited to the warehouse on the 8th April.  The invitation is in the What’s on section.

CNISS are holding a Murder Mystery Night on Sat 20th May.  Maybe we could get a table of 10 together for a good night and to support them.  We have a good relationship with them through the Benevolent Society.

The City of Casey is holding a free event at the Old Cheese Factory for diverse cultures.  Sunday 9th April.
Treasurer's Report
Most people are saying hi as they come in, thank you.  Please make sure you do otherwise you may get marked down as absent.

Please pay only on statement balance.

If you have purchased anything, please get your Director to authorise payments.  A supplier got payed twice instead of the member being reimbursed as nothing was written on the invoice.

The projects account has had a deposit without a reference.  Please let Wendy know if you deposited or it will be recorded as a donation.

Ann McGill - Cord Blood Research
Our guest speaker was Ann McGill from the Inner Wheel Club of Narre Warren about the Inner Wheel Australia project of Cord Blood Research.  When Ann was Australian President she commenced the project, and has just retired from being National Co-Ordinator.

There have been 42 research grants totalling nearly $2.5 million since the program began.  Inner Wheel Australia donates the funds on the medical  specialists advice.

The use of cord blood is a miracle of recycling ¬ giving life today and saving lives tomorrow.  When transplanted into a patient, different types of blood cells can be produced after the patient’s own blood cells have been depleted or destroyed by chemotherapy or irradiation.

Transplantation of this blood produces far less immunological complications than transplant of adult bone marrow. This means that the matching between donors and recipients is less critical, which makes it easier to find suitable cord blood donors.

Once the cord blood is donated it is given to anyone who needs a cord blood transplant.  Unfortunately collection at this stage is only at specialist centres.
The recipient is the patient who is most suitable based on tissue matching and clinical need at the time.  The blood can be sent world wide.

Diseases such as cancer, auto immune diseases, cystic fibrosis, cerebrovascular disease in newborns and prostate cancer are being researched and treated.

We thanked Ann fro her talk about this pioneering work and hearing the stories of the people who have been helped.

Rotaract
Rachel Caulfield, incoming President of the Casey Cardinia Rotaract club informed us what they have been up to.

Their recent Harry Potter Trivia Night raised $2500 for the Royal Children’s Good Friday Hospital Appeal.  The night sold out with 200 tickets quickly by advertising only on Facebook.

They are planning a Star Wars trivia night and movie event soon.

District has generously sponsored 15 Rotaracters for the conference.  Some Rotary clubs will offer free membership to Rotary if they run the clubs social media sites.

Congratulations Adrian Froggatt
