Halmahera International Project

The Rotary Club of Berwick is involved in supporting many local and national charities. But did you know that your local Rotary Club has also supported many international humanitarian projects and charities. Proudly, the Rotary Club of Berwick, with the assistance of many other Rotary Clubs in District 9820, has recently completed building a hospital in Halmahera, an Indonesian Island.

Supported by Rotary Foundation (Rotary’s Charity) a Matching Grant of A$68,000 was issued by Rotary International to assist in supplying all the equipment necessary to make the hospital fully functional, including an ambulance.

This International Project was initially instigated about three years ago after a request was made to the Rotary Club of Berwick by Mr Peter and Mrs Esther Scarborough, who, with their family moved to Halmahera and opened a very basic clinic, in recognition of the Island’s desperate need for professional medical assistance.

Esther, an Australian trained nurse, assisted by Peter and their children worked tirelessly in sub standard conditions with meagre medical equipment and consumables.

Now with the completion of the hospital, the Scarborough family and their staff are truly grateful with the work provided by the Rotary Club of Berwick and the Matching Grant through Rotary Foundation. The people of Halmahera now have a medical facility capable of meeting their needs.
