This week we enjoyed an interesting presentation from Brendan Boon (Eric and Wendy's son) and his wife Bell Boon. For many years, Brendan and Bell have been involved in Scouts, through to the senior level of Rovers and then into Top Gear Scouting as adults. Top Gear Scouting is a program run at the Mafeking Rovers Park, located north of Yea. At car racing events held throughout the year, experienced drivers and car enthusiast share their knowledge and skills with young people, as young as 12 years old.
It teaches young people useful skills such as basic car maintenance and driving confidence and introduces them to the world of car racing. While the older drivers enjoy racing, modifying and fixing cars and just having fun making lots of dust while doing burn outs, tricks and donuts.
Unfortunately, earlier this year during the Longwood fires, the scouting group sadly lost their car racing track and facilities to the bushfires. They are now busy rebuilding what they can while waiting for the insurance to rebuild this great facility.
This week we also met Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Katie Johnston. Katie is a career Police Officer with strong ties to the Dandenong-Casey-Cardinia region. Katie is officially posted at Cranbourne Station as Senior Sergeant but spends most of her time as Acting Detective in the Casey Crime Unit stationed presently at Dandenong.
Katie will be working with Gary Castricum as part of the Victoria Police Leadership Mentoring Program which partners active police officer with Rotarians. Katie is working on an early interviention program that engages young people, aged 8-12, into local AFL teams to engage them into a positive team culture with the aim of reducing the likilihood of them getting into anti-social behaviour. We will hear from Katie at a later date to learn more about the progress of her project.

Next week we welcome Farrah Buckland to speak about the inspiring work of the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation.This program supports students experiencing financial hardship by providing scholarships and practical assistance that enable access to vocational education and training.
