200 Birthing Kits assembled
Posted by Sam McCurdy:

At 5:30pm on Wednesday, 18 Rotarians and friends set out to assemble 200 birthing kits.

The goal was achieved in a productive team effort and their assembly was followed by a regular club meeting and dinner.

Photos provided by Andrew Somers

The items making up each kit were purchased from the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia (BKFA) and assembled in an hygienic environment with the teams working at sanitised tables wearing hygiene gloves.

Each kit consists of a zip bag containing six items, a plastic sheet, string to tie the umbilical cord, gauze, a scalpel, soap and hygiene gloves.

The kits are designed to support hygienic practices and environments during childbirth in under-resourced global settings.

This is an example of Rotarians as 'People of Action'.
'Interact' Information meeting
Posted by Sam McCurdy:
An 'Interact' information meeting was held at Nossal High School on Tuesday evening.

Seventeen people were in attendance including representatives of St Margaret Berwick Grammar School and Nossal High School, as well as Paul Mee, District 9820 Governor.

'Interact' clubs bring together young people ages 12 - 18 to develop leadership skills, while discovering the power of 'Service above Self'.

While an 'Interact ' club has been operational at St Margaret Berwick Grammar for a few years under the sponsorship of the Rotary Clubs of Emerald and Berwick, Nossal High School is proposing to establish a new club under the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Berwick.

Rotarian Peter Cracknell and
Teacher Jon Christie
St Margaret Berwick Grammar and
Nossal High School Students

Peter Cracknell from the Rotary Club of Frankston Sunrise and Teacher - Jon Christie provided information on the successful establishment and achievements of the 'Interact' club at Frankston High School in 2020.  Jon is the 'Interact' Coordinator at the school. His passion and enthusiasm for the project is a key factor in the success of the club.

Other important factors in forming and operating a successful 'Interact' club were:
  • Support from the school Principal and their involvement in club activities.
  • A strong and enthusiastic Teacher - Cooordinator.
  • Effective mentoring and support from the sponsoring Rotary Club.
  • Minimising the bureaucratic requirements, such as Consitution and By laws.
  • Collaboration with the local Rotaract Club.
  • Involvement of students at all Year levels to ensure continuity.
Di Scheepers will be our Rotary Club's Co-ordinator for the 'Interact' club at St Margaret Berwick Grammar School, while Andrew Somers will be the Co-ordinator for the proposed Nossal High School club.
Club's 62nd birthday celebration
Posted by Di Double:

On May 3rd this year, the Rotary Club of Berwick had officially been serving our community for 62 years, so a birthday celebration was held at the Double's residence in Pakenham on Saturday 6th May.

Not even the shocking weather on Saturday night deterred members from getting together to celebrate with our ‘Pasta, Plonk and Poetry’ night.

Good food, with a delicious selection of pastas from Shanikas, great fellowship, accompanied by a glass or three of wine, and a varied selection of poetry, was the perfect recipe for a great evening.

Our longest serving member in attendance on the night (and current Co-President), Jack Kraan, together with our newest member, Michele Somers, cut the birthday cake. This was followed by an extremely tuneful rendition of happy birthday.

Thank you to everyone for braving the rain and the cold to join in the celebrations.
